Common Grace

Today, we are starting our conversation withe a small talk about common grace.

Sam Storms defines Common Grace as:

an expression of the goodness of God, is every favor, falling short of salvation, which this undeserving and sin-cursed world enjoys at the hand of God; this includes the delay of wrath, the mitigation of our sin-natures, natural events that lead to prosperity, and all gifts that human use and enjoy naturally.

Common Grace is necessary to engage if we’re going to lead others to Christ in our culture today.

As Mekdes Haddis, a former guest, shared,

Our understanding of how God works is limited by our humanity, our culture, and the stories we’ve been told, especially in the mission movement-a narrative the West has controlled for centuries… We have lost the capacity to imagine that God’s general revelation would lead people to Christ. In fact, the main way Christianity has been spreading in Muslim countries is through visions and dreams, with Jesus Christ himself revealing himself to others.

A Just Mission

Today, we’re reflecting on Romans 8:20-21 ESV

For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God.

Meet Jenny

Jenny Erlingsson is an author and speaker of Nigerian descent, who has been an avid writer and reader since her childhood. Over the years she has written content for messages, Bible studies, curriculum, websites and proposals. After twelve years of working in Jr. High and Women’s ministry at The Rock FWC, she moved to Iceland from Alabama with her Viking husband and their four cute and feisty children.

She considers writing to be her fingerprint of worship and enjoys crafting fiction, non-fiction, poetry and prose that glorifies God, drawing herself and others closer to Him. She is the author of several books and creative resources including Becoming His, Daddy’s Girl & Daddy’s Boy Devotional, and the most recent book,Milk & Honey in the Land of Fire & Ice. This book, along with Becoming His, has been used as material for Bible Studies and small groups. She also loves getting to share these messages in person and in virtual gatherings.

Out of the overflow of this, Jenny encourages other writers in their call to write, serving as a book doula of sorts. She offers services and limited publishing packages through Milk & Honey Books. She is a member of ACFWCalled Creatives, and also writes for and serves on the board of Velvet Ashes, a ministry dedicated to encouraging women serving cross-culturally.

When Jenny is not running after her kids or ministering alongside her husband, she can be found writing romantic women’s fiction and creative non-fiction and trying not to read five books at a time with a side of Icelandic chocolate.

I asked Jenny:

  • What are some ways to recognize God is transitioning you to a new season and what steps have you taken to surrender to His will for your life?
  • Has anyone ever doubted what you’ve felt God calling you to do? How did you press forward in those situations?
  • How would you describe the spiritual and religious culture there in Iceland and what part does integrity play in your everyday life as you attempt to influence others to turn to Christ?
  • How can the need for the affirmation from others chisel away at our integrity?
